Assam has become the state with the highest crime rate against women in India for the 5th consecutive year, according to the latest figures from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2021.

The new NCRB report was released on Monday.

The crime rate against women in Assam last year was 168.3, which is well above the national rate of 64.5.

In 2017, the crime rate against women in Assam was 143.3; it was 166 in 2018, 177 in 2019 and 154.3 in 2020.

Last year, 29,046 cases of crimes against women were recorded in Assam, an increase of 10.22% since 2021, when the state recorded 26,352 cases. In 2019 the figure was 30,025 and in 2018 it was 27,687.

The crime rate is calculated as the total number of recorded crimes per 100,000 population.

Assam recorded 1,835 cases of rape last year compared to 1,658 cases in 2020. There were 563 cases of attempted rape and 4,511 cases of indecent assault in 2021.

In 2021, 198 women were killed due to dowry-related cases statewide; in 2020 it was 150.

The northeastern state has recorded 1,948 cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO), including 1,317 cases of child rape, 424 sexual assault cases and 158 of sexual harassment.

Assam has recorded 432 cases of cybercrimes targeting women, including posting or transmitting sexually explicit material.

The rate of indictments filed in 2021 for the total number of cases in Assam was 52.9%, which is well below the national rate of 77.1%.
