Author Shelby Wagner was recently welcomed to the Coldwater Region Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting.

His most recent book is “Learning to Dance in the Rain II: Surviving Grief, Internet Dating and Romance Scams”.

Spreading the word to beware of romance scams is her passion. Wagner lives in Sturgis and her business is writing, but writers also have to be marketers, she said. No one buys books they know nothing about.

Recently, she was surprised when a stranger asked her, “How’s your book going?” I see that everything is on the Internet.

Also “all over the internet” are romance scams, Wagner said.

“They are spreading like wildfire across America, leaving broken hearts and empty bank accounts in their wake,” she said.

Romance scams are an epidemic that gets little attention, but in 2019 they became the costliest scams ever reported to the FBI/FTC, she said — nearly half a billion dollars.

Wagner doesn’t know how many copies of books she sold, but thinks the most important thing is “how many people benefited from reading my book?”

Readers who write a book review on Amazon, Google My Business, Barnes and Noble, and Goodreads also help an author spread the message.

Currently, Wagner’s book is exhibited at a dozen national and international book festivals.

Shelby prices include:

  • 2021 Living Now Book Awards Silver Medal: Relationship/Marriage.
  • Firebird Book Award in Grief/Hardship.
  • Royal Dragonfly Book Award in mourning.
  • 2021 “Book of the Year” Finalist Award.
  • Honorable Mention at the Southern California Book Festival.
  • Honorable Mention at the New England Book Festival.
  • Reader Views Award – Five Star Review.

“Learning to Dance in the Rain II” is available from the Coldwater Chamber of Commerce office; online at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Walmart.com; and can be ordered from almost any bookstore.

Wagner is available to speak to groups regarding the subject.
