BUSINESS SHOWCASE: The day included a series of workshops

Written by Mike Hawkins

After such a scorching summer, fall hit us all with full force as the reality of the Christmas countdown began. However, the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce has brought a smile to Brentwood businesses with two milestone events.

Firstly, at the annual Business Showcase on October 5 at the Brentwood Centre, well organized again this year by Brentwood Council, the Chamber had its own ‘Zone’ which included informative workshops presented on a range of topics of interest to local businesses.

The Chamber also sponsored the ‘Best Exhibitor Booth’ award, which was won this year by Easigrass Essex, with its eye-catching display of model animals created with artificial grass.

Then, just two days later, the annual Chamber Business Awards took place, again at the Brentwood Centre, this time transformed into a glamorous gala evening.

Nearly 200 business people gathered to enjoy a celebration of business success in Brentwood. There were nominations for “Best in category” in no less than 13 categories.

And the category winners were:

  • Best Independent Trader Sponsored by Nuffield Health – Chicken & Frog Book Shop
  • Best SME sponsored by You & I Can – Zest Recycle
  • Best Large Business Sponsored by Easigrass Essex – Matchroom
  • Blue Serif Sponsored Best Sales and Marketing – Wylie Wellness Center
  • Best Customer Service sponsored by Bennetts Funerals – Beauty of Heaven
  • Best Local Charity Sponsored by Rainer Hughes – Snap
  • Best Community Involvement sponsored by Hallmark Care Homes – Minus Cloud Nine
  • Best environment sponsored by BEBA (Brentwood Environmental Business Alliance) – The Treehouse Forestry Nursery
  • Best Businessman Sponsored by Tees Law – Kaye Thurgood
  • Rising Star sponsored by erb Commercial Insurance – Freddie Foster Cotton Textile Co.
  • AA&T Sponsored Employer of the Year – THe Treehouse Club Forestry
  • People’s Choice Sponsored by Brentwood Open – Sophisticated Entertainment
  • Overall Business of the Year sponsored by Pinney Talford. Runner-up was Howe Chartered Surveyors – the winner and therefore the overall Best Company of the Year was: Overall Winner – Zest Recycle

Congratulations to all, especially to the overall winner, Zest Recycle, presented by our major sponsors, Pinney Talfourd. We were also pleased to introduce two new categories this year, Rising Star, for under 25s (won by Freddie Foster); and public choice. The People’s Choice was sponsored by the Brentwood Open Facebook page – run by the Brentwood Business Partnership. It generated huge interest and nominations came from a number of its nearly 15,000 subscribers, eventually narrowing down to the winner, Sophisticated Entertainment.

The evening was a great opportunity to cast off the shackles of the past two years and demonstrate that business in Brentwood is healthy and that Brentwood business people are more enterprising and forward thinking than ever.
