Head of Global Corporate Affairs at Amazon Inc, Jay Carney would leave the e-commerce giant to join Airbnb.
At Airbnb Inc, Jay Carney would serve as head of policy and communications. And according to various media outlets, he will report directly to Airbnb Inc CEO Brian Chesky.
Airbnb Inc, founded by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk in 2008, is a San Francisco-based company that operates a virtual housing marketplace for rental and tourist activities.
Jay Carney, who joined Amazon Inc on March 2, 2015, started as senior vice president of global corporate affairs for the multinational e-commerce company.
At Amazon, he was primarily responsible for managing a group of lobbyists and public policy experts who would lobby on behalf of Amazon in various political and authority structures. Public policy analysts mainly focus on the impact or possible consequences and repercussions of every action taken by Amazon Inc in the business world.
What started in 2015 as a small group of nearly 24 Amazon lobbyists and employees has grown into a huge department in 2021 with more than 250 employees working under Jay Carney. The number of registered lobbyists in the firm doubled and tripled under Jay Carney. Jay Carney even struck a deal with the Chinese government and authorities that helped Amazon Inc promote their Kindle devices and e-books in the crowded Chinese market.
According to a letter seen by Reuters news agency, Jay Carney informed Amazon Inc’s corporate affairs of his decision to leave the entity. He also added that he was extremely grateful to have been part of an organization that had a huge impact on society.
Now that Jay Carney has left the company, there would soon be a shake-up in the top-level structure. In an email to senior company executives, Amazon Inc’s chief executive said the company would find a suitable replacement for him.
Until a new replacement is discovered, the public policy lieutenants who worked under Carney would now report to the company’s general counsel, David Zapolsi.
Communications manager for Amazon Inc, Drew Herdener would report directly to CEO Andy Jassy himself.
